How a fiberglass yacht is built
Fiberglass yachts are built in moulds. For a new model the yard first creates a full-size plug and the moulds; for an existing model the moulds are reused. The steps below are typical for a moulded build.
01 Brief & build specification
Confirm the model, layout, propulsion (diesel, hybrid or full electric), battery capacity, colours and options, and agree the build specification and delivery slot with the yard.
02 Engineering & laminate design
Naval architecture and structural engineering: the laminate schedule, core materials, stringers and bulkheads, weights and stability, and systems layout. A detailed 3D model is prepared for tooling.
03 Plug & mould creation
For a new model, a full-size plug of the hull, deck and superstructure is CNC-milled and hand-faired, then the female moulds are laid up from it and finished to a mirror surface. For an existing model the yard's moulds are reused, which removes this stage.
04 Lamination
Gelcoat is sprayed into the mould, then fiberglass and core materials are laid up by hand or vacuum resin infusion. Stringers, bulkheads and engine beds are bonded into the hull while it is still in the mould.
05 Demoulding & assembly
The hull and deck are released from their moulds, the main structure is completed and the deck is bonded to the hull. Tanks, engines and main equipment go in while the boat is still open.
06 Outfitting & systems
Electrical and hybrid-electric systems, plumbing, HVAC, navigation and AV, then interior joinery, upholstery and deck hardware.
07 Launch, sea trials & delivery
Commissioning, sea trials, final checks and handover with documentation and owner training.
Typical payment schedule (fiberglass build)
- Contract signing 10%
- Start of hull lamination 20%
- Hull & deck laminated 20%

What moves the budget
- New moulds for a new model, or an existing production model
- Propulsion choice and battery capacity
- Hull or deck changes that need mould modifications
- Interior finish and joinery specification
